Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School - After-School
Annie: In the first after-school Mindful Mathletes lesson at LELCS in Brooklyn, a girl came in saying “I like math, but I don’t think I’m very good at it.” However, after she became the first student to solve a math problem with limited guidance from me, she felt excited and said “I’m actually quite good at math!” This demonstrates the power of Mindful Mathletes in nurturing growth mindset and math confidence in students. In another lesson, a group of girls collaborated to find the hidden pattern/strategy behind a math game called the Sweeping Squares Challenge. The girls were very eager and drew different “paths” on the TV, the desk, the papers, and even their phones. When one girl first identified the pattern, she jumped up and shouted, “I see it!” She then tested her hypothesis before reaching a concrete conclusion. Eventually, we together used mathematics to explain the pattern!
